William Maddison, of Ellergill, having married the heiress of Marley, of Unthank, bore the Marley arms till 1635, when Sir Lionell Maddison, Knt., of Newcastle, descended of the Maddisons, of Ellergill, in the bishopric of Durham, obtained a grant, 6 June, 1685, from Le Neve, Norroy, of the following arms, Quarterly, 1st and 4th, ar. two battle axes in saltire sa.; 2nd and 3rd, ar. on a chev. sa. betw. three martlets of the second, a mullet or, for Matley. crest, An armed arm with a gauntlet ppr. garnished gold, issuing out of a crown flory, and holding a battle axe ppr. charged with a cross gu. the staff sa.
